Rundlewalker Welcomes Road Safety Strategy – But Calls for Stronger Action to Protect Young Drivers.

Roger Henderson, Head of Personal Injury Statement on Road Safety.Rundlewalker Solicitors’ Personal Injury & Accident Team has welcomed the UK Government’s recently published Road Safety Strategy, acknowledging any step that aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roads. However, the firm also recognises that more ambitious action is needed to protect some of the most vulnerable road users - particularly young and newly qualified drivers.

The long-awaited strategy, the first in over a decade, sets a target to cut road deaths and serious injuries by 65% by 2035, with an even more ambitious 70% reduction for children under 16. It also proposes important measures such as consultations on a minimum learning period between theory and practical driving tests and wider safety improvements across the driving journey.

Bereaved families and road safety experts have expressed support for the strategy as a positive first step, noting the Government’s recognition of the disproportionate risk faced by young drivers. At the same time, many campaigners believe the proposals do not go far enough - urging the introduction of a comprehensive Graduated Driving Licence system and other targeted safeguards shown internationally to significantly reduce deaths and serious injuries among novice drivers.

PACTS has launched Protect Young Drivers, an evidence-based websiteRundlewalker Statement on Road Safety.
Roger Henderson, Director & Head of Personal Injury at Rundlewalker Solicitors, said:
“We wholeheartedly support any measure or step which aims to reduce injury and loss of life on our roads. Too many families have faced the devastating consequences of road collisions and it’s imperative that we do all we can to prevent further tragedy.

“The Government’s Road Safety Strategy includes measures that deserve recognition, but there is more to be done - particularly to better protect young and novice drivers who remain disproportionately affected. We urge policymakers to consider evidence-based reforms that have worked elsewhere and could further reduce the unacceptable toll of road deaths and serious injuries.”

Looking Ahead.
Rundlewalker’s Personal Injury Team continues to work with bereaved families, road safety campaigners and legal partners to champion improvements in driver education, licensing and road risk mitigation. The firm remains committed to supporting evidence-led policy that will make Britain’s roads safer for everyone.
